Funnily enough, getting a *new* TV that isn't 4K and without Smart TV is actually quite difficult. Then again, no reason not to get 4K. Smart TV is pretty annoying though sometimes.

Cheap because manufacturers realized tv is dead. Why would I get up from my desk to go sit down on another chair to look at a screen 10 feet away? That I have to pay yearly for because you need to pay the Gov a tv license when you buy a tv wtf

My question is why are TVs so expensive? There is nothing to them anymore, a few dollars worth of LED strips, some plastic filters, general power electronics and common processors all integrated on a PCB. The LCD panel itself is the only "expensive" part but really I can't imagine the cost of manufacture is that high either.

Regarding that smart tv point - can we *finally* get laws forcing tech companies to provide an easy, permanent, complete opt-out for ads and tracking on purchased devices? And maybe while we're at it, force interoperability with alternate OSes? We need to go back to separating the hardware layer from the software layer (like in PCs) so people can choose their experience again.

I've set up Pi-hole (1) as a recursive DNS server on my home network, and it's pretty much shut all of that data collection nonsense down. It wasn't until I set the Pi-hole up that I realized just HOW MUCH data every device on my network was leaking by default. Vizio televisions will not only send usage statistics to Neilson ratings, but they will collect their own usage data for their own use as well, by capturing a few pixels of the current screen to determine what you're watching. And up until a little bit ago, Vizio was collecting data WITHOUT users consent. (2) So take control of your data. Don't let companies make money off of you. Sources: How to set up Pi-Hole (LTT video) - lttown.info/baby/rXOMiNSopsCMq2s/vaizdo-ra-as Vizio caught collecting data without user consent - www.nytimes.com/2017/02/07/business/vizio-television-vizio-collected-viewers-habits-consent.html

I guess the reason people buy a TV EVERY YEAR on Black Friday is because the TVs are so dirt cheap that they are crap that they have to run out and buy another dirt cheap crap TV the very next year. Maybe wait a week or 2 later and then buy a TV that's a little more expensive and a little more better that will last a good 5 years or so.

What about the majority of manufacturing moving to China? I feel like that has also brought down prices as well
Toby Jackson
Toby Jackson Prieš mėn
Not necessarily. It's mostly the data collection and advertising possible in smart TVs that subsidises the price. There are local manufacturers within my country that pay well above minimum wage. Their TVs are still competitively priced, and their smart TVs are still cheaper than the basic, non-connected models
Edgematic Prieš mėn
in 100 years they will look at us and think wtf why were they so stupid putting everything on screens and having a screen in every room and in in your pocket, your watch etc... we humans are biological beings and a screen cannot fitful our human needs, in the future there will so many things that will be tailored much better to our senses and not just to our eyes. We will very deeply regret having all this shit produced and not thinking about the consequences

I hate smart TV's and bought a non smart LG 1080P 48" TV for under £230.00 a few years ago, its awesome and turns on way faster than our smart TV, (do not leave it on stand by, I just turn it off) so all the transformers and components will last far longer too. Also, as most smart TV's are android based, they can become obsolete, (no new version updates force you to buy a new TV about every 5 years if you want all the features) so for these reasons it just annoys me. DO NOT BE A SHEEP! BE THE SHEPARD!
Klaevin Prieš mėn
couldn't you turn a "smart" TV into a screen by... not hooking it up to wifi or a router?
Toby Jackson
Toby Jackson Prieš mėn
Not all smart TVs will allow that. And others will annoy you into connecting it. My TCL Smart TV for example has a super bright white flashing light 24/7 (even in standby) when you aren't online. And you can't even cover it up because the light goes around the IR receiver. As well as a pop up warning every 30 minutes to say there is a connection issue.

I still don't understand why in the world would somebody would want a "smart" TV. They throw in the cheapest processor and combine it with the worst software ever developed to deliver some of the worst user experience of any electronic device. Buy the panel you want and plug in your laptop. Saves you hundreds of dollars and you get all the conveniences of a pc
movement2contact Prieš mėn
TVs sell my usage data too...?? 😵😡
Toby Jackson

Yes. Lots of data collection and advertising opportunities. This is how the cost is subsidised.

LTT, you need to set an example by looking at a manual or show a motherboard manual so newbies don't think it's uncool or "untechie" to use a manual. Of course, you might need a course on reading a motherboard manual, especially in sections dealing with settings. By the way, I saw your(Linus's) video on setting up RAID using INTEL's but is there one for AMD's RAID?

@Toby Jackson I did connect it to my Wi-Fi however, I did not agree to the terms and conditions for its smart functionality and therefore it is disabled.
Toby Jackson
Toby Jackson Prieš mėn
@J Money if that's possible on your TV that's great, but unfortunately not all smart TVs allow it, annoyingly. Some will nag you with repeated warnings and errors until you give it Internet, and others will simply fail to function unless networked.
J Money

Smart TVs are subsidised by the smart TV features with lots of opportunities to make money from data collection and advertising. That can't be done on a monitor.

One more reason to either search for a "dumb" TV or just never connect the "smart" TV to the network. A Pi with OpenELEC is way better than what manufactures offer anyway. Unless that TV wants network on first setup anyway and you need to get an alternative firmware for your darn TV.

No, that's not it, it didn't happen to CRTs to plasmas and early LCDs, Sony or LG or Samsung or Sharp never did it until early 2000s. Go ask your economics professor or some knowledgable person who knows global economy. The answer is not how LCD panels are made, but rather who are the ones making it, and why do they have such a strong motive to lower the cost.
