i want to say that this is partialy irelevant, even if you knew exactly how much space you have, your cant control how large a file is... i mean if your file is 101MB you cant trim it to 100MB to fit it into your space (there are sollutions like compression but our control over file size will still be minimal)

A great video on a stupid topic that really shouldn't be a problem anymore. Why do we happily allow companies to sell us media in this completely misleading fashion. It's a known problem, but no court case on it has ever asked more of the companies than add a disclaimer. Instead, maybe force them to show the actual usable capacity of the drive they're selling so that they either have to increase the storage to an actual round figure, or sell the drive as the 978 GB or whatever it really is instead of calling it a 1TB. And it's only going to get worse as the sizes of drives increase and the difference creates larger and larger variances. Now is the time to fix the problem.

Pretty good summary. Companies that stood to make money push for the standard change and it was approved by a US standards authority not the EU one, although it's been many years maybe it has now. Either way the is no use for a base 10 definition unless you're trying to sell some for more than it's worth. Nobody I know in the tech industry in my country ever use the Mebibyte term and always refer to megabyte as 1024 kilobytes. It was that way it was for a reason, and they want to change it for money or stupid reasons like making it be like the rest of the Si units but then there's no reason for it in the first place. It's about time they drop all this nonsense and go back to the way it was. HDD manufacturers still lied about it back then, it started in the mid 90's and nobody held them to account. Well they started to so that's why they campaigned to fix something that wasn't broke.

WTF!? Are you kidding me?! Those things like Kilo-, Mega-, Peta- are greek prefixes we use. Shortening prefix itself gives no sense at all. It is like instead of King's row, you would call it Ki's my row. Those who choiced those names should go back to high school and take phycisc lectures properly atleast (in case you do not have mandatory mathematics, latin or ancient greek).

I'm the other way around, I've always seen a kilobyte as 1024 bytes, a megabyte as 1024 kilobytes, and a gigabyte as 1024 megabytes (or 1073741824 bytes), and interpreted that as more common. I always just saw the thousandfold increase as something hard drive manufacturers were doing. I hate that the industry has caved to that standard and we're now having to refer to them as kibi/mibi/gibibytes, etc.

There was really very little ambiguousness to these terms before they decided to invent the new terms. It was generally accepted in tech circles that a kilobyte was 1024 bytes, etc. It only caused confusion among the uninitiated who didn't know to expect computer data sizes to be powers of two. That was just something that you learned as part of learning about computer technology. However, once someone decided to redefine the old terms to match conventional expectations (read: "those of people unfamiliar with computer technology") and create new terms to replace the old terms in most contexts, the real confusion started. Most people in the tech field were very resistant to that change. Those that heard about the new terms didn't like them, and in turn didn't promote the learning or use of the new terms for others in the industry. It took so long for the new terms to trickle into use that I was unaware of their existence for over ten years, and they still aren't generally used by techs that I know (except as a joke) more than twenty years after their invention. The only people to fully embrace the redefining of the old terms were hard drive manufacturers so that they could mislead customers to think that their drives were bigger than they actually were. I'm not sure whether the redefining of the old terms was the result of some sort of super-pedantry or if there was some other motive, but it didn't serve to eliminate any confusion about computer technology, but has only added to it. This is mostly because the new definitions of the old terms are basically useless in the context of computer technology for anything other than misleading hard drive buyers. In my experience most computer techs continue to use the old terms with their original meanings and only mention the new terms on occasion to mock them.

I had an idea for a Techquickie episode (though I'm not sure how long it would take). For major triple A games (like Cyberpunk 2077) which obviously need top of the line computers to run smoothly, what level of hardware do they need to develop such games? Do they use even more 'state of the art' equipment? (if so has Linus or any in the team played games on them?) or do they have other techniques to develop games using more standard equipment. Thank you in advance and well done with such great content.

So... technically the industry isn't lying... it's windows that lies to you and calls gibibytes GigaBytes. in short you do get over 500,000,000,000 bytes when having a "500GB" drive so it is technically correct it's only windows that decides to divide by 1024 instead of 1000 IMO a much worse offender is the "100 Mega" internet connection speed.

Since the prefixes are exponential the proportional difference increases with every step you go so in theory the issue will actually become more and more significant as we store more and more data. Even just going from Kilo to Peta takes the difference from 2.4% to 12.5%. That's from basically negligible to 1/8th. Of course if storage size stops ballooning, which I think is expectable, this may never come to a head. We'll need to more than double the number of recognized prefixes before it becomes a 50% difference.

A little more on 4k being the minimum storage space of a sector on a drive: if a file only takes up 1k, it still takes up the entire sector meaning 3k is wasted. Sectors are clustered together for larger files, with the last sector in the chain suffering the waste. So if a file takes up 10k, that's 3 sectors (12k) with 2k wasted space in the last sector. Literally, a 3k file takes up less space (4k) than three 1k files (which take up 12k).

But whenever I hear byte (or bit) I usually get lost and I'm always wondering if whatever I'm looking at is apples to apples (for example compared to maybe something else I've seen previously) and yes, I realize this may be very simple to some people
