I side with Google on this one, it's the media's fault for not innovating fast enough to ride the internet wave, then they demand payment for linking their supposedly "public" articles? What a bunch of losers.
Bambim Prieš 2 mėnesius
So nice to see the "news" outlets die faster and faster with each day. Maybe that will create a market for real news platforms.

At the end ,you got me lost....what was a message ? What you are saying ? You are extremely happy to be a "meat " for google and they advertising money ? Do you know .....89% of internet users feel "trapped" in google, facebook ,"microsoft" ,"apple" and how they using advertising , jaws ? Can you see from that what was mentioned ,ordinary people using PC and internet just cant get a brake ? OS-are taken over by advertising ,browsers are taken over by advertising ,you tube is taken over by advertising.
Tb Prieš 2 mėnesius
this is a simple fix.... any "news" outlet site that doesn't agree with google not paying wont show up in the search results i hope other browsers take the same stance no one really cares about your crappy articles just because you serve news doesnt put you above other websites
StaySic4Ever Prieš 2 mėnesius

Link tax laws are bad for freedom of press & independent journalism. The major news sites make plenty of money from other sources i.e. News Corp owns The Telegraph, The Sun, Sky News, Fox News etc. Do they really need money from link taxes? Nah. Is it about stomping out the competition so they can do a better job at indoctrinating the masses? Definitely.

I would like to correct something here, it's not the Australian government trying to get parts of googles code, it's Rupert Murdoch's 'government' trying to push the Murdoch monopoly further by taxing Google and screwing over smaller outlets so he can then buy them out, this isn't new, it's how he became who he is

Google pay the site that shows up in their search engine is dumb. But if google should pay when a site shows up in their snippet (or something that give you direct answer even though its not always the correct answer) is smart. Because with their snippet, they preventing people who search the correct answer for clicking the site (that probably have the correct answer) and seeing the complete answer. I mean, google should just giving us the search result, not the direct answer of why there is a banana in my pizza.

How about fuck news sites? We have LTtown. The reason news sites don't succeed anymore is because most of them just make bs click bait articles, and paywall won't work cuz nobody feels like it's worth it - simple. Either git gud and start doing actual journalism, or fuck news sites. There are so many LTtownrs that provide much more valuable data in these terms.

Facebook partnered with publishers years ago with a thing called "Instant Publishing," where if they made a better mobile UI and allowed users to open the article without having to leave the FB app, they would receive a cut of the ad revenue from FB. Many refused. Google also tried similar ad revenue splits. They tried in that regard, but the revenue accrued was peanuts (for everyone involved). The site banner ads weren't exactly a money maker to begin with, either. Where they really hurt publishers and started putting them out of business was forcing them to split the branded/native ad dollars. Forcing them to cough up a massive chunk of those sponsored articles and custom content shown in the feeds has lead to the demise of even the most modernized content machines like BuzzFeed and Great Big Story. There are no viable business models left for publishers at this rate.

How would they go about blocking exploiting the tax? get a bot to get the links from google.. then "click" on the links over and over. What if you setup your news site with all the "internal" links to actually be google cached link addresses, so even using your own site you'll get tax benefits?

Im probably misunderstanding something, but those laws seem incredibly stupid. I dont like google or facebook, but forcing them to pay just so shitty news companies could stay afloat, seems stupid, especially since most news companies in a single country are usually owned by same people, and spread propaganda (at least in my country). They could also start making really shitty articles and force google/facebook to just pay up. All of this just smells like a scam
