Having different ecosystems can be frustrating. I feel as if home automation won’t ever really take off till there is some type of industry standards. Having a passion for tech I don’t mind, and I love finding solutions. But it limits the customer base to the techies.

Hey Techquickie team! Please double-check standards: "This standard specifies operation in the unlicensed 2.4 to 2.4835 [29]GHz (worldwide), 902 to 928 MHz (Americas and Australia) and 868 to 868.6 MHz (Europe) ISM bands." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zigbee

You'd do just as well to use Powerline Network Adapters to possibly pair with a PLNA hub/router. IrData with spread spectrum can still be useful even though it won't penetrate solid surfaces like walls, furniture, people, or pets. Too much needless reliance on microwave transceivers.

Can highly recommend Hubitat as a home automation hub. It's rules engine is fantastic and easy to use. Supports both zigbee and zwave devices, and works with things like Hue lights and switches, even Sonos speakers. Solid product, and doesn't spam you or try to mine your data.

The dial-up modem shown operates at 0.1 kbps (110 bps (it was actually called 110 baud back then)) - WELL below anything in use today. Dial-up modems never exceeded 64 kbps - just under 2/3 of ZWave and a quarter of zigbee.

WiFi should only be the second option, after wired Ethernet, but above Bluetooth. For home automation, again, wired ethernet should be the first option, WiFi second. However that's where things get messy. For things like security cameras, Power over Ethernet should always be used for all devices that have a permanent fixture. For things like smart lightbulbs, it would be better if devices could do G.hn and act as a short-range WiFi bridge if necessary, thus removing the danger of many unsecured devices. With Zigbee and Z-wave, you will keep running into weaknesses in their security, and thus using them in a security context is potentially fatal. If something like a z-wave bulb has a vulnerability, then are you going to throw it out, or what if everything produced before 2018 is vulnerable, are you going to rip it all out? The ideal mechanism to deal with door locks is to actually swap the position of the lock and door latch, and do the POE thing with a battery backup. It really sucks to have the battery die and not know who holds that key for the door. Better yet is a magnetic lock system (you might recall seeing these in public buildings to release the fire doors when a fire alarm activates) and the magnetic lock is released when you use your smartphone/keyfob.

Yeah WiFi absolutely would not handle fully blown smarthome installations. Our house has something like 80 different light switches, control panels, remotes, locks, motion sensors, etc. One consumer WiFi network would be overwhelmed, but the ZigBee network has been great (we've had this system since at least 2010).

If you have an old house you are adding smart appliances too this is great. If you are building a new home you should have routed wires for power and communication in the walls to where they needed to be during construction. Anyone building a home should have planned out all of the routing for wires needed for their smart home with an architect/engineer well before they broke ground on their home. Wireless is great but it will never be as reliable as a wired connection. Running PoE smart devices with built in battery backup in case the power goes out is the best way to do things full stop. The only reason to use battery powered smart devices is if you are living in an old home and just want to add some tech to it. Bluetooth sucks, I've never had a bluetooth device that wasn't constantly disconnecting randomly or start suddenly making screeching noises so loud it feels like your ears might start bleeding. Even in my car with the phone 2 inches away from the head unit I have issues at least once an hour with bluetooth. Use as few battery powered devices as possible and go out of your way to try and find a solution that includes ethernet and PoE for the devices. I'm all for living in a wireless world but the tech we have right now is a long way from giving us that cord free utopia we all want.
Skirata Prieš 6 mėnesių
On the wiring part for a new house, imo you should also always include “empty conduits” in case there’s a new standard in the future so that you could easily adopt said new standard.

So why hasn't any manufacture started putting zigbee and/or z-wave support in phones and wifi/bluetooth chips for PCs?
Skirata Prieš 6 mėnesių
Because smart home stuff usually connects to a central hub which is connected to your local network. It’s therefore simply unnecessary to put it in devices which are never going to use it anyway.

Zigbee can be configured as a mesh, but they generally is not (it long predates the IoT hypetrain). Zigbee has standards in 2.4 and 900 mhz. Wi-Fi can do frequency hopping (DFS) just as many other wireless standards do. Also, there is a lot more to a wireless standard than just whether it supports mesh (are there are a million considerations in mesh networking) and bandwidth. Self-healing, packet loss, RSSI and range, noise rejection, robustness to motion, MIMO, compliance to local wireless laws, etc... Generally, be careful about generalizing specifications in wireless standards. They're constantly changing, and there is a lot more to the actual standard than what is generally used in the consumer domain. I would consult with a RF electrical engineer if you really want to put out a good summary of existing technologies that's both succinct and accurate. If you just want to focus only on these standards as they are relevant to consumer technology, that's fine too, but be honest and say that. The prevalence of your channel will give off a seriously wrong impression to people who are looking for good background knowledge on these deep subjects.
